Arizona SPJ tackles Josh Wolf issue

The UA Society of Professional Journalists will be hosting a panel Monday night at 6pm in the SUMC Kiva Room to talk about the Josh Wolf issue and blog journalism issues in general.

Panelists will include:

  • Dr. Kevin Kemper, UA journalism law professor
  • Allison Winters, UA student researching journalism and blogging
  • Robert Leger, Assistant editorial page editor for the Arizona Republic, Co-vice chair of the national SPJ Freedom of Information committee
  • Yours truly.

I suppose the panel may mark an end to the political side of my life, as my choice of career has other things in mind for me. All politics on the Growler (unless something really unusual occurs) will cease April 11th. Either on or after this date, I will be announcing my career plans and transitioning the blog to a close.

(I was going to try to put out a podcast relaying this as a “phased withdrawal from politics,” but I figured that would go too far.)

Respect for opinion columnist

The Wildcat ran an interesting opinion piece today.

The author, Jared Pfulm, never identifies himself as gay — that would probably go against the point of his article — but he does mention his boyfriend, leading me to believe that he has, as he would put it, “less common sexual preferences.” And that’s what makes this next part interesting: the piece contains a very outspoken opposition to the proposed notion of an LGBT center on campus.

I (as a conservative-ish individual not necessarily opposed to an LGBT center) am impressed. This stance demonstrates a certain willingness to step outside of popular opinion, not easy on such a sensitive issue. It also shows more fair-mindedness and honest thought than is typical of the Wildcat opinion section.

I say Kudos to Mr. Pflum, who writes:

By segregating themselves into small, restrictive groups, individuals who have less common sexual preferences almost certainly guarantee that they will never gain widespread acceptance.

I believe Garrett once made a similar point regarding racial differences.

Yowza! Board of Regents wants $130 tech fee (up from $65)

The Arizona Board of Regents apparently wants to increase the new mandatory student technology fee from $65/yr to $130/yr.  The fee appeared to have slipped under our noses last year, but this proposed increase appears to be meeting some opposition.

Two ASUA senators have set up StopTheFee.org and a cooresponding Facebook group in order to organize opposition against the fee, which is expected to be voted upon on November 30th.

Expect more blogging (or maybe a podcast) within the week if I’m not too stuffed.  The pre-Thanksgiving influx of papers and presentations is officially over.
